The Maldives State Shipping (MSS) is planning to welcome a new ship to transport cargo to Addu and Gaaf Alif Kooddoo.

The decision to buy a new ship for the government's shipping company was announced by president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at a ceremony held on Saturday to inaugurate land reclamation in Addu.

"When the world stopped with covid, the newly-formed government cargo shipping company started running," Solih said.

Despite starting with zero, the company now owns three cargo ships. A new ship will be added for the company next July.

MSS managing director Mohamed Nazim told Adhadhu that the ship, which has the capacity to carry 15,000 metric tons, is expected to arrive in mid-July.

"About 100 containers can be carried on it. The ship will travel between Male', Addu and Kooddoo," Nazim said.

The ship has been operating in India for eight years but remains in good condition and the payment has been completed, he added.
