Authorities have concluded that there was no police negligence in the death of 43-year-old Abdulla Rasheed nearly six months ago.
Rasheed and two others were detained in Gaaf Dhaal Hoadedhdhoo island in an operation by the police drug enforcement department.
People at the island harbor stated that he complained of chest pains as the police attempted to ferry him off on a speedboat.
His family accuses the police of not providing immediate medical assistance. He was taken to a hospital on Madaveli island.
The national integrity commission (NIC) and the human rights commission (HRCM) launched investigations and conducted a post-mortem despite family objections.
At Monday's parliament session, Madaveli MP Hussein Firushan questioned home minister Imran Abdulla about the investigations.
“The family has not received a single phone call since the post-mortem. There is no news. We don’t know what the investigation concluded,” he said.
Imran said that the investigation was aimed to clarify whether there was direct involvement of the police leading to Rasheed’s death.
“There is no evidence to prove police abuse or intentional negligence,” he stated.
He further stated that decisions should not be made based on rumors and that action should not be taken until wrongdoing has been proven.
