A prison officer has been suspended for attempting to smuggle drugs into the Asseyri prison in Kaafu Himmafushi island.
Maldives Correctional Services stated that the officer, caught red handed with the drugs, was under police custody when suspended.
Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu on Friday tweeted that the officer was held in a joint operation by Corrections and Police based on intelligence information.
“It is deeply concerning that officers are sometimes involved in such crimes,” he said.
Last November, a 23 year old prison officer who had served in Corrections for five years was detained with drugs in a similar operation.
“We are closely monitoring suspicious officers and other staff. This operation was carried out after noticing the actions of this officer,” Mohamed Fulhu told Adhadhu in November.
It was the first time an officer was arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs into the prison. But, officers have previously been arrested for smuggling phones and other items.
