A 28-year-old man from Fuvahmulah has been sentenced to 75 years in jail and fined MVR 300,000 for drug trafficking.
Abdul Baasith was arrested on April 27, 2024, as part of a special operation launched against money laundering and drug trafficking networks.
Police raided his home and seized a large amount of drugs. The case was sent to the Prosecutor General's (PG) office on June 11, 2024.
As part of the investigation into the operation, police arrested 174 people linked to the two networks on various occasions, including the leaders of the two networks responsible for the extensive drug trafficking in Fuvahmulah.
They investigated 188 cases and 78 cases were sent to the PG office.
Police investigations uncovered a number of cash transactions by the leaders of two alleged money laundering networks.
"More than MVR 3 million and more than USD 19,000 have been transferred to accounts opened in Abdul Baasith's name," police said.
