President Mohamed Muizzu has issued a presidential decree, declaring a public referendum on holding the presidential and parliamentary elections together.

The proposed constitutional amendment was rushed through the government-controlled People’s Majlis on February 10.

The question to be put to the public reads: “Do you approve the ratification of the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution, which provides for the Presidential and People’s Majlis elections to be held concurrently and for a change to the term of the People’s Majlis?”

The decree states that the referendum will be held on April 4, alongside the local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections.

The Elections Commission (EC) will carry out the necessary arrangements to conduct the referendum in accordance with the law.
