The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is set to launch its campaign for the local council elections on February 12.

The MDP spokesperson for the council elections, Abdulla Waheed, told a press conference that the launch will be held after completing preparations.

“We are working on all the necessary preparations for the elections and hopefully on the night of February 12, the MDP will launch the campaign for the local council and WDC,” he said.

The MDP is working to form campaign teams across the country to win the council elections, he said.

He said the training for the MDP candidates and campaign teams will start today and the work is being done to ensure that the MDP wins the election by a large margin.

Waheed accused the government of giving jobs and carrying out intimidation tactics to disrupt the council elections.

According to the Elections Commission (EC), 294,937 people are eligible to vote in the April 4 local council elections.
