Maldives felt tremors from earthquake near Nicobar Islands

The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has said the country felt tremors after an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck near the Nicobar Islands of India on Monday night.

The earthquake struck at 11:41 pm and did not cause a tsunami.

"But we received reports that tremors were felt in some places in Male' and Hulhumale' in connection with the earthquake," the Met Office said.

The seismic monitoring system in Gaaf Dhaal Kaadedhdhoo recorded tremors at 11:48 pm.

The distance between the Maldives and the Nicobar Islands is 2275 km.

The Met Office said the earthquake is unlikely to pose any threat to the Maldives.

Indian media reported, citing relevant agencies, that the earthquake does not pose a threat to any country in the Indian Ocean.
