The Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) has said that there are no irregularities with the electricity bills.
URA said the authority obtained data sets from utility companies to investigate the issue of rising electricity bills. The studies showed that the company did not find any irregularities with the billing.
"To investigate the issue of increasing electricity bills, the authority has analyzed data sets from utility companies. And our findings show that the figures in the bills are correct and there have been no irregularities in billing. Electricity bills have risen due to increasing usage," Assistant Director General Naifa Hassan told Adhadhu.
URA has received complaints from the public about high electricity bills. The authority assured that a proper investigation will be done when the complaints are submitted formally.
Many social media users have complained about the high electricity bills and some people accuse State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) of meddling with the bills. However, the company denies the allegations.
Meanwhile, STELCO and the Maldives National University (MNU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to conduct an academic study on electricity usage.
