An employee of the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) suffered serious burns in an incident at the old power station in Hulhumale' on Wednesday.

In a statement, STELCO said the incident occurred while working to resolve a problem with a switchgear.

Switchgear is used to supply electricity to the grids. It is like a breaker used to supply electricity to households.

The man sustained serious injuries and was first taken to Hulhumale' Hospital. He was later transferred to ADK Hospital.

STELCO said the cause of the electrocution was being investigated by the company and the police. STELCO said it will cooperate with the police investigation.
