British billionaire Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic Airlines has launched flights to the Maldives.

The airline's first flight, which operates between London Heathrow Airport and Velana International Airport, landed at 07:40 am Monday.

The arrival of the Virgin Atlantic aircraft was welcomed by a warm traditional Maldivian Boduberu along with captivating cultural dance performances.

The ceremony to mark the launch of Virgin Atlantic flights was attended by the UK Ambassador to Maldives Caron Rohsler, senior officials of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and senior officials of the airline's agent Voyages Maldives.

"This inaugural flight marks a significant milestone in the enhancement of air travel connections between the United Kingdom and the Maldives," said MACL CEO Mahjoob Shujau.

The airline will operate between London Heathrow Airport and Velana International Airport.

Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Atlantic Juha Jarvinen said the airline is proud to be able to offer more opportunities for customers to experience the Maldives.

"The collaboration between MACL and Virgin Atlantic reflects the shared commitment to delivering exceptional travel experiences and fostering stronger air connectivity between the United Kingdom and the Maldives," he added.

British High Commissioner to Maldives Caron Rohsler noted that Maldives is a top holiday destination for British tourists and that Brits have consistently featured among the top three nationalities visiting Maldives for many years.

“The UK Government has worked with the Government of Maldives for many years now on airport safety and aviation security. I look forward to continuing our partnerships in Maldives, especially as the airport expansion progresses," she added.

The new service is operating three times a week, on the airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner boasting 31 Upper Class, 35 Premium, and 192 Economy Delight, Classic, and Light seats.
