Mohamed Firaq, CEO of Inner Maldives, has called for an investigation into a video allegedly showing a wedding ceremony between two men at a Maldivian resort.
Snapshots from the video circulating on social media show two men holding hands at a local resort. Based on their attire and the imagery captured in the photos, the event appears to be a symbolic wedding ceremony.
Expressing his concern in a social media post, Firaq said that while the Maldives has been a world-class tourism destination for half a century, everyone must respect the country's laws, regulations, and cultural norms.
"Even if these resorts are operated by foreign investors, they are not exempt from Maldivian law. Foreign investment is not a license to violate the laws of the land," Firaq wrote in his post.
"...I call upon the government and relevant authorities to investigate this incident and take legal action."
In addition to Firaq, many others have criticised the video, asserting that such activities should not be permitted on Maldivian soil. However, some government supporters have commented on social media that such incidents have occurred in the Maldives for a long time and are difficult to prevent.
