Mohamed Aiman Ismail, the former councillor for the Maafannu South constituency, has been arrested in connection with a sexual abuse case.
Police said that a big part of the investigation into Aiman had already been completed by the time he was taken into custody.
"He has been brought into police custody, and a major part of the investigation phase has been completed. We are currently consulting with the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office to finalise the remaining components," the police said.
The allegations of sexual abuse against Aiman first came to light in October last year, after his former wife shared the details on social media.
The arrest follows concerns raised by his former wife regarding the pace of the investigation and the fact that he had remained at large despite the allegations.
Police have not disclosed the reason for the delay in arresting Aiman since the case was first reported.
