A man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison and fined MVR 100,000 for concealing narcotics in a farming area on the island of Gaaf Dhaal Gan.

Ali Shazeen, 37, of Gaaf Dhaal Gadhdhoo, was found guilty of trafficking diamorphine following allegations that he stored and distributed illicit drugs.

During a court-authorised search of the agricultural zone in Gan, authorities discovered substances suspected to be narcotics along with alcohol.

Following the investigation, the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office pressed two charges against Shazeen: drug trafficking and engaging in a prohibited activity without the required permit.

The Gadhdhoo Magistrate Court, which presided over the case, ruled that the prosecution had proven both charges against the defendant.

The case was reported to the police on August 10, 2021. Following the conclusion of the investigation, the matter was forwarded to the PG Office for indictment on September 1, 2021.
