President Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed departed for Pakistan today on a state visit.

During the visit, which concludes this Thursday, the President is scheduled to hold high-level talks with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. He is also expected to meet with several other senior government officials.

The two nations are set to sign 12 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during the trip. Pakistani media outlets have reported that these agreements include a pact on military cooperation.

The President’s visit follows a trip to Pakistan last month by a delegation of 16 members from the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC). That delegation was led by the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

During that visit, Speaker Abdul Raheem met with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir. In addition to serving as the head of the army, General Munir holds the highest military rank in Pakistan.

As Muizzu travels to Pakistan, former President Mohamed Nasheed and former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail departed for India today.
