The Laamu Gan Island Council has expressed concern over the lack of progress in identifying the recipients of the 100 housing units, even as the project initiated by the previous MDP administration nears completion.

Speaking on Adhadhu’s "Rashu Note" program, Gan Council President Afsal Jauwar stated that the council had requested the Housing Ministry to allow it to manage the allocation process. He added that if the Ministry preferred to handle it directly, the council urged it to expedite and finalise the process itself.

However, Afsal noted that the Housing Ministry has not yet provided the council with details on the procedures for handing over the units.

"During our council's most recent visit, we met with the Ministry. We emphasised that the project is nearing completion and expressed our willingness to take over the process if they would delegate it to us," Afsal said.

"We also informed them that it is fine if the Ministry chooses to handle it directly. Our goal is to hand these housing units over to the public as quickly as possible so they can begin using them. However, no information regarding this has been shared with us yet."

Afsal further highlighted that the Ministry is currently managing the allocation of the housing units without any involvement from the local council.

"The process is being carried out without any role for the council. The government has not entrusted us with the announcement of the units or any part of the allocation process," he said.

The project to construct 100 housing units in Laamu Gan was awarded to SJ Construction and commenced in December 2022. Afsal confirmed that 95 percent of the work is now complete.

The project, valued at MVR 84.24 million, consists of 100 units, each measuring 1,000 square feet. Each unit features three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a dining area, a laundry room, and a storeroom.

To ensure a comfortable living environment for residents, the project also includes the installation of street lighting around the units, the development of a park, and the construction of a vehicle parking zone.
