The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has officially announced that the elections for its National Council, the party’s highest decision-making body, will be held on November 27.

The announcement was made by MDP Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed during the closing ceremony of the party’s congress held last night.

Nasheed, the former President of the Maldives and former Speaker of Parliament, said that the National Council elections would be conducted in accordance with the fourth amendment to the party’s constitution.

This marks the first election to be held following major structural changes to the party’s administrative framework.

The congress introduced key reforms to the composition of the newly formed National Council.

One of the most notable changes is the abolition of the positions of Party President and Vice President within the restructured National Council. Instead, the new council is designed to be more inclusive, ensuring broad representation across the party’s various constituencies and branches.

Under the new regulations, the National Council will comprise the Chairperson, Deputy Chairpersons, and members elected to the council from various constituencies.

Furthermore, the council will include the President of the Women’s Wing along with five elected members from that wing, as well as the President of the Youth Wing and five members elected from its ranks.

To enhance participation across different party organs, the President and three Vice Presidents of the Counselors’ Assembly, along with the President and three members of the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) wing, will also hold seats on the National Council. Additionally, all members of the Parliamentary Group, the President and Vice President (when the party is in government), MDP cabinet ministers, and mayors will serve as members of the National Council.
