State Electric Company (STELCO) announced today that private parties will be held accountable for damages caused to power cables during excavation work.
STELCO stated that, moving forward, it will recover all costs incurred to repair and restore services following damages to its power grid caused by the negligence of private parties.
"As incidents of damage to STELCO's cables are increasing daily, the company has decided to hold those conducting excavation work responsible. In cases of negligence, the parties involved will be required to bear the full cost of resolving the issue and restoring service," STELCO said.
The utility provider noted that power outages resulting from cable damage during various road excavation projects cause hardship and inconvenience to the public.
STELCO emphasised that this decision aims to protect citizens from the disruptions caused by power cuts and to ensure the sustainable delivery of high-quality services.
The company has urged all parties undertaking excavation work to plan and execute their projects responsibly to ensure no damage is caused to the electrical grid.
