A STELCO employee has been suspended after it was confirmed that staff were being pressured into joining the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) through the misuse of official influence.

In a social media post, STELCO announced the suspension of an employee following a phone call made during Raajje TV’s "Fashaairu" program this morning.

"In connection with the phone call discussed in the media, the accused employee has been relieved of their duties pending an investigation into the matter," STELCO’s statement read.

The revelation that STELCO staff were being coerced into joining the PNC was brought to light by Amir Saleem, the channel’s Head of Programs and Coordination.

During this morning’s live broadcast, Amir called the STELCO Human Resources Department’s landline, inquiring which number he should send a screenshot to after signing up for the PNC.

The misuse of influence was exposed by the response from STELCO’s HR department to Amir’s query.

Following public outcry and mounting criticism against the utility company, STELCO’s official statement did not deny that the call was placed to its HR department. Instead, the company stated that it is investigating the call and will take necessary disciplinary and administrative actions in accordance with company regulations.
