The Maldives Police Service has requested the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office to press charges against six individuals accused of assaulting police officers and obstructing them from performing their duties.
According to the police, the request for prosecution follows an incident on the afternoon of August 11, 2026, in Kaafu Maafushi. The suspects allegedly attacked officers while they were conducting a search of an individual suspected of drug possession and trafficking.
The individuals named in the case are Abdulla Nihad, Ibrahim Suneez, Ahmed Ahnaf Asfaq, Hassan Nabeel, and Mohamed Shaihan. All the suspects are residents of Maafushi.
Police confirmed that all suspects were taken into custody under court orders. While Hassan Nabeel was released by the court during a remand hearing on September 21, the remaining five suspects remain in police custody.
Authorities further noted that another local youth, Mohamed Shabin Shujau, was also arrested at the scene of the assault. Although the Maafushi Magistrate Court released him under conditions, the police confirmed that his release has been appealed at the High Court.
