The official symbol for the Maldivian Rufiyaa has been incorporated into the Unicode Standard.
The symbol was included in Unicode version 18.0, released yesterday by the Unicode Consortium. The designated code point for the Rufiyaa symbol is U+20C2.
The Unicode Consortium is the international body responsible for maintaining standards that ensure currency symbols and characters used worldwide are recognised and consistently displayed across all digital platforms.
The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) said that the inclusion of the Rufiyaa symbol in the Unicode Standard will allow for its uniform use across websites, mobile applications, and various other digital platforms.
"This is a major milestone in making the Maldivian Rufiyaa symbol easily accessible across digital tools. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who assisted the Authority in the efforts to include the symbol in the Unicode Standard," the MMA said.
Mirroring international currency symbols such as the Dollar, Pound, and Euro, the MMA introduced the official Rufiyaa symbol in 2022. The design features the Thaana letter "Raa" with two horizontal parallel strokes.
