Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim concluded his official visit to the Maldives and departed this afternoon, following his arrival in the country last night.
During the visit, the Maldives and Malaysia signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fields of religion and defense.
Furthermore, Malaysia has agreed to sign a $100 million currency swap agreement. The two nations also reached a consensus to initiate discussions on establishing a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA).
During the high-level talks, President Mohamed Muizzu invited Malaysia’s state-owned energy giant, Petronas, to explore oil and mineral resources within the Maldives.
The two countries also agreed to bolster cooperation in renewable energy, tourism, and digital infrastructure. Discussions were also held today regarding the streamlining of consular and visa services to facilitate easier travel and residency.
Prior to the Prime Minister’s departure, Muizzu and the First Lady hosted an official luncheon in honor of the visiting Malaysian leader.
