Maldives and Malaysia Official Talks

The Maldives and Malaysia signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) today during the official visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to the Maldives.

The agreements focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fields of defense and Islamic affairs.

The defence MoU was signed by Defence Minister Hassan Rasheed, while the Islamic agreement was signed by Islamic Minister Mohamed Shaheem. Both MoUs were signed on behalf of the Malaysian government by the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry.

These agreements follow several MoUs signed during President Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to Malaysia last year, which sought Malaysian cooperation in health, tourism, sports, financial services, diplomatic training, defence, and the digital sector.

Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Malaysia were established in 1968. Under this long-standing partnership, the Maldives established its embassy in Malaysia in 2006.
