Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar has called on the residents of the city to protest against the current administration, accusing the government of obstructing Addu's development and victimizing its citizens.
In a post on social media platform X, Nizar said that the dismissal of over 100 employees from Fenaka Corporation’s Addu branch is a decision that will marginalize numerous families and inflict damage on the city's economy.
Nizar further asserted that he is certain these employees were terminated based on their political affiliations.
"We must oppose this cruelty and discrimination. With the increasing obstruction of Addu City’s development, the victimization of its people, and the rise in deception, I call upon the residents of Addu City to come out and protest against the government’s oppressive policies within the rights guaranteed by the Constitution and legal frameworks," Nizar wrote in his post.
Concluding his post, Nizar said that he would stand in solidarity with the citizens who take to the streets in protest.
The dismissals at the Addu Fenaka branch took place on August 13. Mayor Nizar alleged that the employees were terminated under the direction of three Members of Parliament representing Addu constituencies: Ahmed Azaan Marzooq, Ibrahim Didi (IB), and Ismail Nizar.
Speaking previously to Adhadhu regarding the matter, Nizar noted that those dismissed were employees below the supervisor level at Fenaka’s Addu operations.
The Mayor’s call for protests against government policies comes as the Male’ City Council also recently decided to lead a nationwide protest involving all local councils against a proposed bill that would allow the central government to reclaim lands currently under council jurisdiction.
