The exchange rate for the US Dollar on the Maldivian black market hit an unprecedented high of MVR 22.45 today, continuing an unchecked upward trajectory.
At the start of this week, the black market rate stood at MVR 22.00. The value has surged by 45 laari over the past four days alone, marking the highest rate ever recorded for the dollar in the Maldives' parallel market.
After holding at MVR 21.70 on July 29, the rate began a steady climb. By the end of last week, it reached MVR 21.85, which was already considered a record high at the time.
The official exchange rate set by the central bank, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), remains at MVR 15.42. Current black market rates represent a premium of MVR 7.03 over the official rate—a staggering 45.59 percent increase.
As the black market price continues its relentless rise, significant difficulties in sourcing foreign currency are also being reported.
To address the dollar shortage gripping the economy, President Mohamed Muizzu introduced a new policy mandating resorts and guesthouses to exchange their foreign currency earnings through the local banking system. Following the announcement, the government suggested that dollar rates would stabilize; however, current market realities appear to be defying the administration's expectations.
Data shows that even during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic—when borders were closed and tourism was at a complete standstill—the dollar rate peaked at MVR 19.50, and only for a brief period. When Muizzu assumed office, the black market rate was MVR 17.45.
Economic experts attribute the current surge to the difficulty of obtaining foreign currency for imports through the formal banking system. Furthermore, the state's foreign debt obligations have intensified demand, further driving up prices on the black market.
With the dollar rate spiralling out of control, the cost of goods and services in the Maldives is rising rapidly. This inflationary pressure is driving up the cost of living for citizens and presenting economic challenges.
