Public consultations were launched yesterday regarding the "Bodu Badhalu" (The Big Change) proposal, a series of systemic reforms to the Maldivian governance structure put forward by former President Mohamed Nasheed and former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail.
A website has been launched to provide information on the proposal and to gather public feedback. The website was officially inaugurated by Nasheed, who currently serves as the Chairperson of the MDP.
The main reform proposed by Nasheed and Fayyaz involves restructuring the method of electing the Head of Government and the Head of State. They clarified that the proposed model is neither a strictly presidential nor a parliamentary system, but rather a unique framework tailored for the Maldives.
The "Bodu Badhalu" initiative also encompasses measures to safeguard the core principles of the Constitution and to restructure the system so that neither the Parliament nor the Executive can exert undue influence over independent institutions and the judiciary.
Key proposals from Fayyaz and Nasheed include requiring public consent for the removal of Supreme Court justices and members of independent commissions. Additionally, the reforms suggest a new mechanism for atoll representation in the People’s Majlis and the introduction of a process to recall Members of Parliament.
Nasheed secured the MDP chairmanship by campaigning on the tenets of the "Bodu Badhalu" proposal and gaining the support of party members. An office has now been established within the MDP to oversee the "Bodu Badhalu" initiative.
