The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has scheduled its congress for October 1–3 and announced that the event will feature an investment forum.

Speaking at a press conference today, MDP Deputy Chairperson Mohamed Shifaz confirmed that the congress will be held at the Male’ City Hall. He noted that the selection and official announcement of delegates for the congress would take place within the next few days.

"We are dedicating one session of this congress to an investment forum. Our objective is to facilitate a platform where local councils can present planned island development projects, connect with potential investors, and secure the necessary means to bring these initiatives to fruition," Shifaz said.

Shifaz explained that the decision to include an investment forum followed consultations with local councils across the country. He revealed that 74 projects have already been submitted to the MDP Secretariat for presentation at the forum.

He expressed optimism that the number of proposed projects would exceed 100 before the congress commences.

"Through this investment forum, we aim to gauge interest and secure participation from both local and international businesses for the projects envisioned by our councils," Shifaz added.

The MDP’s governing statutes mandate that a national congress be held every five years. This year’s congress has been themed "Raahvehi Ufedhun" (Civic Innovation).
