June 15, 2026: Meeting of the MDP National Council

The National Council of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has approved a motion to hold the party’s congress on September 19.

The proposal to convene the congress on September 19 was submitted by the party's Chairperson and former President, Mohamed Nasheed, who presided over the National Council meeting.

Nasheed’s proposal passed with 52 votes in favour. A total of 63 members attended last night's session.

"Holding the congress on September 19 will not delay the National Council elections. We have no intention of extending the current National Council’s term. The elections will be held as soon as the term expires," Nasheed said.

The MDP Congress is the party's highest decision-making body, comprising representatives from party branches and all other key organs. According to the party's charter, a congress must be held at least once every five years.

The congress is responsible for establishing party policies, amending the party's constitution, and making decisions regarding the dissolution of the party.

With the MDP Congress scheduled for September, discussions have already taken place regarding potential changes to the National Council. Among the proposed amendments is a measure to ensure that no member can be appointed to the National Council without an election.

As the MDP prepares for its congress, the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) is also making arrangements to hold its own party congress. During that convention, six individuals are expected to be elected to the positions of party vice presidents.
