A letter has been submitted to President Mohamed Muizzu expressing concerns over overflowing sewage junctions in Hulhumale’, warning that the situation could escalate into a major public health crisis.
In the letter, Ali Ibrahim, a resident of Hulhumale’, highlighted that sewage is leaking from junctions near Blue Heaven Residence and Reethigas Residence in Phase 1. He noted that the overflow is reaching a critical point that could lead to a health emergency.
"This situation could lead to an unimaginable health disaster. I am certain that Your Excellency understands better than I do the severe dangers posed by raw sewage seeping into the island's groundwater lens," the letter stated.
The resident noted that despite repeated requests to the Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), no permanent solution has been provided. He emphasized that a lasting fix would require a complete redesign of the area’s junction network to accommodate the current population density.
"A permanent solution would involve redesigning the entire area and replacing the inspection chambers (ICs), among other technical upgrades. I have been informed that the existing sewage lines lack the necessary capacity for this neighborhood. It appears that because this area was not zoned for high-rise buildings and high-density living, it still relies on an outdated, small-capacity sewage system," he explained.
Ali Ibrahim further pointed out that four new buildings are currently under construction in the affected area. He expressed concern that once these buildings are occupied, the strain on the already failing infrastructure will become catastrophic.
As MWSC currently appears to lack a plan for a permanent overhaul of the system, Ibrahim appealed for the President’s direct intervention to resolve the issue.
While sewage overflows are also frequently reported in various parts of Male’, MWSC typically responds by cleaning the affected junctions as a temporary measure rather than implementing long-term structural changes.
