President Mohamed Muizzu announced yesterday that his administration has completed 590 projects across various sectors, even as the President’s Office continues to withhold detailed information on these projects, as requested under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

Speaking at the official ceremony marking Independence Day, President Muizzu stated that these 590 projects were completed and delivered over the past two years and eight months.

"Indeed, within this freedom of progress and civilisation, we are not merely making empty promises. These are all completed achievements. As of today, yes, over the past two years and roughly eight months, we have completed and delivered 590 projects across various sectors," Muizzu said.

The announcement comes after Adhadhu submitted an RTI request to the President's Office seeking specific details. The request asked for comprehensive information regarding projects awarded, foundation stones laid, pledges made during the President's island visits, and an itemised breakdown of presidential campaign promises that have been fully fulfilled to date.

On July 5, the Information Commissioner's Office (Icom) ordered the President's Office to disclose the requested project details to Adhadhu within 14 days. However, despite the 14-day deadline passing, the President's Office has failed to release the information.

Due to continuous non-compliance with statutory response deadlines under the RTI Act, iCom fined the President’s Office MVR 2,000 on July 13.

During his Independence Day address, President Muizzu further compared his administration’s track record with that of previous governments, noting that the former MDP administration had completed only 285 projects in the same timeframe, while the preceding PPM administration had completed 321 projects.

President Muizzu asserted that, without favouring larger islands over smaller ones, his administration is working fairly and through a decentralised approach, promising that almost every project pledged during his term will be successfully completed by Independence Day 2028.
