A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed yesterday to procure equipment for fitness and recreation centers in 42 islands under the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) scheme, funded by grant assistance from India.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the Maldivian government by Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam during a ceremony held at the Foreign Ministry. High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian signed on behalf of the Government of India, while Youth Minister Abdulla Rafiu signed on behalf of the implementing agency.

Speaking at the ceremony, Iruthisham said that providing equipment for these centers is an investment in the health and well-being of island communities. She noted that the project would facilitate the promotion of healthy and active lifestyles, expanding access to quality health and wellness.

Rafiu highlighted that these fitness and recreation centers would serve as vital hubs for promoting healthy living, strengthening social bonds, and fostering community wellness.

He noted that the project would expand opportunities for people of all ages—particularly women and youth—to participate in sports and recreational activities, thereby enhancing the overall health and resilience of the public.

During the ceremony, both ministers expressed their gratitude for the generous assistance provided by the Indian government, noting that such support brings transformative positive changes to Maldivian communities.
