More than 200 cases of domestic violence were reported over the past three months, according to statistics released by the Family Protection Authority (FPA).
The FPA stated that 236 cases of domestic violence were reported directly to the authority or through other institutions during the last quarter, bringing the total number of referrals to 258.
The data shows that 59.3 percent of these cases were reported to institutions within the Greater Male’ area. Shaviyani Atoll recorded the second-highest number of cases, followed by Haa Dhaalu Atoll.
Among the victims reported over the last three months, 208 were female and 73 were male. This includes 170 adults over the age of 18 and 38 children under the age of 18.
According to the statistics, verbal abuse and psychological violence were the most frequently reported forms of domestic violence. This was followed by intimidation and threats, while physical assault was the third most common form of abuse reported.
The Family Protection Authority was established in 2012 following the enactment of the Domestic Violence Prevention Act. The legislation aims to raise public awareness and ensure that perpetrators of domestic violence are held accountable under the law.
Since 2022, the Family Protection Authority has also been providing legal assistance to individuals seeking protection and justice in domestic violence cases.
