Police arrested another individual last night in connection with the violence that broke out during the vote counting of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) internal elections held on Saturday.
According to the police, the suspect apprehended under a court order is a 24-year-old Maldivian male. This brings the total number of arrests in the case to three.
During the altercation, individuals obstructed police officers from performing their duties and caused damage to school property.
Allegations have surfaced that the son of Hussain Shareef, the Member of Parliament for Hulhumalé North, was involved in the violence. It is further alleged that several staff members from the President’s Office and political appointees of President Mohamed Muizzu participated in the brawl.
Amidst the chaos at Kamil Didi School, an elderly PNC member suffered a panic attack, while several other members sustained various degrees of injuries.
Footage circulating on social media shows individuals physically assaulting and pushing police officers, defying orders, and obstructing law enforcement.
While some PNC members allege that the group responsible for the violence was dispatched by MP Hussain Shareef, the lawmaker has categorically denied these accusations.
