A team of Maldivian orthopedic surgeons at ADK Hospital has successfully performed a "Reverse Shoulder Replacement," an advanced surgical procedure aimed at restoring shoulder function.
This achievement marks a significant milestone in the hospital's ongoing efforts to provide specialized orthopedic care within the Maldives.
The surgery was led by ADK Hospital’s Senior Consultant in Orthopedics, Dr. Mohamed Mishwar Ashfaq, and Consultant in Orthopedics, Dr. Mohamed Razzan Rameez.
This successful procedure demonstrates that the hospital’s local surgical team now possesses the expertise to independently perform complex operations that previously required the assistance of foreign specialists.
Reverse Shoulder Replacement is a specialized surgery for patients suffering from severe shoulder arthritis or irreparable rotator cuff tears, conditions that often lead to chronic pain and restricted mobility. By replacing the damaged joint with implants, the procedure significantly reduces pain and restores range of motion, allowing patients to regain their independence.
Reflecting on the procedure, Dr. Mishwar noted that while shoulder replacements are less common than knee replacements, the surgery offers a life-changing solution for those enduring persistent pain and loss of limb function.
"Previously, these operations were conducted with the assistance of visiting professors from countries like Malaysia and Thailand. However, our orthopedic team has now acquired the necessary skills and experience to provide this treatment independently, without having to wait for foreign experts," Dr. Mishwar said.
Dr. Razzan explained that during a Reverse Shoulder Replacement, the traditional "ball and socket" structure of the shoulder is reversed. This design allows the patient to use different shoulder muscles to lift the arm, bypassing the damaged rotator cuff muscles to provide better stability and strength.
"By creating a new joint using metallic implants to replace damaged components, we can significantly alleviate pain and improve the overall function and movement of the shoulder," Dr. Razzan added.
The hospital reported that the patient’s recovery following the recent surgery has been highly promising.
The patient experienced near-total pain relief shortly after the procedure and was able to lift their arm to a 90-degree angle by the first postoperative day. ADK Hospital noted that previous patients who underwent this surgery at the facility have seen excellent results; following physiotherapy, some have achieved a range of motion of up to 160 degrees.
A key advantage of this development is that patients no longer need to wait for visiting international doctors. ADK Hospital is now equipped to offer this service at any time based on the patient's clinical needs.
