Under a regulation governing the collection of data to monitor greenhouse gas emissions, air conditioning service providers and all land and sea transport operators are now mandated to record, maintain, and share emission data with the Environment Ministry.
The regulation outlines the administrative frameworks and procedures required to measure, register, and verify the Maldives' greenhouse gas emissions. Ensuring the verification of these emission levels is a mandatory obligation for all signatories to the Paris Agreement.
The regulation identifies 13 key stakeholders required to collect and report data. These include government agencies, major industries, and all sectors providing services through energy consumption.
Stakeholders required to record greenhouse gas emissions:
- Utility Regulatory Authority
- All utility service providers
- Tourist resorts and tourist facilities
- Maldives Customs Service
- All entities in the industrial and manufacturing sectors
- All refrigeration and air conditioning service providers
- Civil Aviation Authority
- Environmental Protection Agency
- Airport operators
- All land, sea, and air transport service providers
- Importers, producers, and providers of energy products and services
To implement this regulation, the ministry said that each stakeholder must establish the necessary administrative arrangements to collect, manage, and facilitate the submission of required data.
While stakeholders are responsible for establishing their own administrative processes, the ministry is required to conduct programs to provide the training and capacity building necessary for these parties to fully fulfill their duties and responsibilities as outlined in the regulation.
