The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdulla Shahid has alleged that the government's decision to establish specialized units in every ministry to coordinate development projects is a pretext to create more political positions.
The decision to establish these units was finalized during yesterday's cabinet meeting. Criticizing the move in a post on X, Shahid accused the government itself of being responsible for the current suspension of various projects.
"The existing system already includes personnel to monitor and execute these projects. The real issue is a lack of leadership, policy, and direction. The sole purpose of this move is to create more political jobs," Shahid said.
The former Foreign Minister characterized the establishment of such units as a self-admission that the government's administrative framework has failed.
"The public does not want more units, portals, committees, and excuses. What the people want is for projects to be completed, for contractors to be paid, and for promises to be fulfilled," Shahid added.
In addition to the ministerial units, the government has also decided to establish a specialized unit within the Finance Ministry to identify and resolve day-to-day challenges faced by State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).
