Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has failed to clarify the reasons why the People’s National Congress (PNC) leadership lost confidence in Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim.

Speaking at a PNC press conference today, Abdul Raheem said that Nazim has been removed from his position as the PNC’s Dhiggaru constituency president due to a loss of confidence. However, despite repeated questioning, Abdul Raheem declined to provide a direct answer on what caused the loss of confidence.

"No, I am not going to say it was because of specific actions. He was removed because the leadership no longer has confidence in him. I have stated the reason—it is a lack of trust. There could be many reasons behind it, but I do not wish to go into details during this meeting," he said.

Noting that a no-confidence motion would be submitted to Parliament against Nazim while he served as Deputy Speaker only if trust had been lost, Abdul Raheem emphasized that the decision to remove Nazim from his party post was made by the PNC leadership.

Nazim dismisses ruling party allegations as baseless

MP Ahmed Nazim resigned as Deputy Speaker after dismissing the ruling PNC's no-confidence motion as baseless. He denied allegations of political bias and misconduct, asserting he fulfilled his duties with integrity. Nazim maintained that no evidence was provided to support claims that he violated parliamentary rules.

Abdul Raheem further noted that a new constituency president for Dhiggaru would be elected during the PNC Congress. He explained that according to the party’s charter, a new constituency head must be elected if the sitting MP is removed from that party role.

He added that there are currently no plans to expel Nazim from the PNC. If he were to be removed from the party, he would lose his seat in Parliament under existing laws.

Nazim resigned from his position as Deputy Speaker of Parliament just moments before a scheduled session to vote on a no-confidence motion against him, which had been signed by 73 PNC MPs.
