The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed has participated in discussions regarding the development of the Male' City Strategic Action Plan, observing the ongoing efforts by the Male' City Council.

Nasheed visited the Male' City Council this morning. Following a meeting with the newly elected council members, he took part in a consultative session for the "Rethink Male' City" initiative.

The "Rethink Male' City" project, commissioned by the Male' City Council to Charrette Studio, is an initiative aimed at finding sustainable solutions to the various challenges facing the congested capital.

The plan is built upon seven key pillars encompassing environmental, economic, and social sectors. These include:

  • Prioritizing public transport and pedestrian accessibility while reducing dependency on private vehicles.
  • Increasing greenery and urban forestry to mitigate flooding and reduce rising temperatures in the city.
  • Relocating industrial activities away from residential neighborhoods.
  • Designating special economic zones and areas aimed at boosting employment opportunities.
  • Ensuring access to affordable housing and public social spaces for citizens of all demographics.
  • Preserving Malé’s architecture and heritage sites to pass on its cultural richness to future generations.
  • Building a city that is accessible for the elderly and ensures social security for all residents.
