Provisional results from Friday’s election for the chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) show that former President Mohamed Nasheed secured 68.9 percent of the vote, while Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem received 30 percent.
According to the provisional results released by the MDP yesterday, a total of 30,895 people cast their ballots in Friday’s election. Of these, 21,301 voted for Nasheed, while 9,462 voted for Mickail. A total of 234 ballots were declared invalid.
Ibrahim Mohamed (Vaadu), who initially submitted his candidacy but later withdrew to support Meekail, also received 132 votes.
With 50,176 members eligible to vote, the provisional figures indicate a voter turnout of 61.5 percent. This represents a high turnout for a political party internal election.
The party has decided to hold a re-vote for the Gaaf Dhaal Fiyoaree ballot box after it was damaged while voting was underway, leading to the annulment of its results.
Nasheed, who emerged victorious in the chairperson election, officially assumed the post yesterday. Following his win, Nasheed spoke with his opponent, Meekail, and stated that they would work together on the party’s future endeavors.
