The President of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Abdulla Shahid, has declared that it is time for the party to realign its ranks and work toward defeating President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.

Congratulating former President Mohamed Nasheed on his victory in the MDP Chairperson election, Shahid stated on X that the party must now focus on unseating the current government and restoring an MDP administration that aligns with the people's aspirations.

"This is the time to reorganize the MDP's ranks and work together to defeat this government and secure the kind of MDP governance that the Maldivian people desire," he said.

Highlighting that the MDP Chairperson election was the largest internal political activity held by a political party in recent times, Shahid expressed his gratitude to all members who demonstrated the spirit of democracy, as well as the party volunteers who ensured the election proceeded peacefully.

Furthermore, Shahid commended the democratic example set by the other candidates in the race, Galolhu South MP Meekail Naseem and Ibrahim Mohamed, thanking them for their participation.

A total of 50,176 members were eligible to vote in the MDP Chairperson election, with 241 ballot boxes placed across the Maldives. Additionally, a ballot box was stationed in neighboring Sri Lanka to facilitate voting for members residing there.

The position of Chairperson is the most influential administrative role within the MDP. Nasheed has previously served in this capacity.
