Former President Mohamed Nasheed has described his victory in today’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson election as a win for democracy in the Maldives.
"My sincere thanks to the beloved members of the MDP and the 'Bodu Badhalu' (Big Change) campaign team. This is a major win for democracy and the reform movement in the Maldives. I also extend my congratulations to candidate Meekail Naseem," Nasheed said.
Based on the votes counted so far in this election, Nasheed has secured nearly 70 percent of the total vote.
"We will work together. I have already sent a text to President Solih. We will begin that work on Sunday," Nasheed added.
Nasheed is currently at the Artificial Beach celebrating the victory with his supporters.
"This was an effort by the members to revitalize the party. Fayyaz has also been working with me from the very beginning. My heartfelt thanks to everyone," Nasheed said.
A total of 50,176 individuals were eligible to vote in today's election. However, the exact voter turnout has not yet been confirmed.
The position of MDP Chairperson is the most powerful administrative post within the party. Nasheed has previously served in this capacity.
