The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Abdulla Sodiq (Sobe) has pledged to hold the government accountable through the People’s Majlis after winning today's Hithadhoo North by-election.
In an exclusive interview with Adhadhu, Sodiq said that he would work within Parliament to ensure the government remains answerable regarding the challenges facing Addu City as well as national issues.
"God willing, I will work through Parliament to hold the government accountable, to ensure the administration is answerable for the issues concerning Addu and the country," Sodiq said.
He attributed his by-election victory to the tireless efforts of MDP members, his family, and independent supporters who are not affiliated with any political party.
Highlighting that the result was a testament to the MDP leadership working together, Sodiq noted that the party’s prospects would continue to improve if they maintain this collective approach.
"This success was achieved through the efforts of the MDP leadership and everyone involved. This is the result of the MDP working together. It shows that if we remain united, the future looks promising," Sodiq added.
Sodiq further noted that despite the government’s attempts to influence voters in the Hithadhoo North constituency, the final outcome was a clear mandate against the administration.
Sodiq’s political career in the constituency dates back to 2011, when he was first elected to the Addu City Council representing Hithadhoo North. He successfully defended the seat with significant majorities in the two subsequent elections, securing 1,147 votes in 2014 and 1,376 votes in 2017.
The Hithadhoo North seat became vacant after the Supreme Court ruled on April 12 that the previous incumbent, Mohamed Sinan, had lost his seat due to a proven debt.
