An audit report has revealed that the now-defunct Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) failed to recover over MVR 30 million by 2024.
The Auditor General’s Office released the report following an audit of Broadcom’s 2024 financial statements. The report highlighted that the commission failed to prepare its mandatory annual report, which must include comprehensive financial statements, for the year 2024.
While MVR 30,578,453 remained uncollected by the end of 2023, the Audit Office noted it was unable to determine how much of that outstanding debt was recovered during 2024.
According to the audit report, this discrepancy was due to a server failure at Broadcom, which prevented officials from accessing and retrieving necessary documentation.
During 2024, Broadcom recorded a total revenue of MVR 7,445,297. This income was generated through telecommunications licensing fees collected by the commission.
In October last year, Broadcom was dissolved, and all its powers and responsibilities were transferred to the newly established Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (Control Commission).
