Supreme Court Justice Hussein Shaheed has been appointed as the Vice President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
The position of Vice President became vacant following the resignation of Yazmeed Mohamed. He was the member appointed to the commission by President Mohamed Muizzu.
The Vice President of the JSC is elected through a vote among the commission members. The President of the commission is also elected via a similar internal vote.
Shaheed was appointed to the Supreme Court in March 2025 to fill one of three vacancies on the bench. These vacancies arose after one justice resigned and two others were removed.
The investigation into the three Supreme Court justices began shortly before hearings were scheduled to commence on a constitutional challenge seeking to nullify an amendment that mandates members of parliament lose their seats if they leave their political party.
Following proceedings that bypassed legal due process, two justices were removed from their posts. Those removed were Justice Mahaz Ali Zahir and Justice Azmiralda Zahir.
