A team from the China Railway Design Corporation has arrived in Male' to survey the streets of the capital and Villimale' as part of a Chinese-funded grant project to redevelop the roads of both islands.
The agreement to redevelop Male's roads with Chinese assistance was finalized during President Mohamed Muizzu's state visit to China in January 2024.
The arrival of the survey and inspection team was announced yesterday by the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua.
"China has always prioritized the road issues that are of concern to the Maldivian people, and will work with the Maldives to improve the road drainage system to benefit people's livelihoods," he said.
While physical construction under the Chinese aid project has yet to commence, several teams have previously visited the Maldives to conduct surveys and feasibility studies.
Ahead of the main project's commencement, the government has already begun redeveloping Boduthakurufaanu Magu. The section from the Male' Local Market to Jetty No. 1 has now been completed, which included land reclamation to widen the road in that area.
