The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdulla Shahid has reiterated calls for the immediate release of journalists currently detained at Maafushi Prison.
In a post on X, Shahid expressed deep concern over reports that journalist Leevan Ali Naseer is being held in solitary confinement and denied necessary medical treatment following his arrest.
"The authorities are responsible for his safety and well-being and must ensure he receives urgent medical attention without delay," wrote the former Foreign Minister.
Adhadhu journalist Leevan was sentenced to 10 days in prison by the Criminal Court on May 12. The court ruled that he had violated a "gag order" by reporting on the injunction issued amid mounting criticism of President Mohamed Muizzu following the release of the "Aisha" documentary.
On the same day, Adhadhu journalist Mohamed Shahzan was sentenced to 15 days in prison. He was convicted of violating the court order after a question posed to Muizzu during a press conference at the President's Office on May 11.

Jailed Adhadhu journalist Leevan Ali Naseer has been moved to solitary confinement despite his deteriorating health and a worsening skin condition. Held for contempt of court, Leevan is reportedly being denied access to essential medicine and family-provided supplies while being forced to sleep on the floor in unsanitary conditions.
This marks the first instance since the adoption of the current Constitution where journalists have faced criminal prosecution and imprisonment for writing a news report or asking a question.
While Shahzan and Leevan were sentenced for allegedly violating the gag order, several political leaders—including senior officials from the ruling People's National Congress (PNC)—party members, MPs, and social media activists have also been accused of breaching the same order. However, no investigations or legal actions have been pursued against them.
