A historic meeting between three former presidents—Mohamed Nasheed, Abdulla Yameen, and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih—has been scheduled for Friday night.
The meeting, set to take place in Male', is scheduled for 8:00 pm. Adhadhu understands that the three former leaders will also hold a joint press conference following their discussions.
"Despite their differing political ideologies, all three leaders have agreed to work together on major national issues of this magnitude," said a senior official involved in organizing the meeting.
This marks the first time in Maldivian political history that these three leaders, who represent diverse political ideologies, will sit at the same table for discussions. The objective of the meeting is to collaborate on defending journalists and addressing national concerns.
The three former presidents are expected to discuss the Muizzu administration's jailing of journalists and obstruction of freedom of expression.
The decision to hold this meeting comes at a time when the current administration has imprisoned Adhadhu journalists Mohamed Shahzan and Leevan Ali Naseer.
Shahzan was arrested after questioning President Mohamed Muizzu regarding sexual misconduct allegations. Leevan was imprisoned for reporting on a gag order banning discussion on the "Aisha" documentary detailing the allegations against Muizzu.
