Former President Abdulla Yameen has expressed his readiness to work with former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to defend press freedom.
In an interview with Sun Online, Yameen said he is prepared to work alongside the two former presidents from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), though he did not provide further details.
"This attack [on press freedom] is unacceptable," Sun quoted Yameen as saying.
The statement follows yesterday’s Criminal Court sentencing of Adhadhu journalists Mohamed Shahzan and Leevan Ali Nasir to prison. In response to the verdict, former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail called on the former Presidents to unite in action.
Fayyaz said that it is time for the leaders to step forward for the sake of the nation and save the country. He further assured that the MDP stands ready to participate in this effort alongside the three former Presidents without hesitation.
Additionally, Fayyaz voiced grave concern over the mounting obstacles to press freedom and demanded the immediate release of the detained journalists.
