Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has asserted that the administration of President Mohamed Muizzu will fail in its attempts to suppress press freedom and the right to free expression.
The statement follows the imprisonment of Adhadhu journalist Leevan Ali Nasir for 10 days in connection with a news article, and the 15-day detention of journalist Mohamed Shahzan after he questioned Muizzu.
In a post on X tonight, Solih described these actions as a shameful new chapter in the government’s efforts to intimidate the media and silence public criticism.
“This is clear evidence of the government’s influence over the judiciary. Such attacks on press freedom and freedom of expression will not succeed,” Solih wrote.
Solih further pledged that he would never back down in defending the hard-won rights and liberties guaranteed to every citizen under the Constitution.
The cases of both Shahzan and Leevan are linked to serious allegations against Muizzu featured in Adhadhu’s documentary, "Aisha." In an attempt to suppress discussion of these allegations, the court has issued a nationwide "gag order."
