Iruthisham Adam, the third Foreign Minister of President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration—which initially planned to reduce dependence on India—departed for an official visit to the country today.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the visit follows an invitation from India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar. This marks Iruthisham’s first official overseas trip since assuming the role of Foreign Minister.
During the visit, discussions will focus on "further strengthening the long-standing close ties of friendship between the two countries and enhancing cooperation across various sectors between the Maldives and India," the ministry added.
The Foreign Minister is accompanied on this trip by Additional Secretary Dr. Ibrahim Zuhuree and Assistant Director Aminath Guraisha.
The Muizzu administration rose to power following a campaign that fostered hostility under the "India Out" slogan. In the early days of his presidency, Muizzu aimed indirect criticism toward India, asserting that the Maldives "cannot be bullied."
Furthermore, he announced plans to reduce reliance on India and outlined specific measures to achieve this. However, as the administration approaches its two-and-a-half-year mark, Muizzu appears to be acting in contradiction to his own policies.
