The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged the public to prioritize national interests and exercise extreme caution when speaking openly about the Maldives' foreign policy, regional security, and international relations.

The government’s statement comes at a time when former President Mohamed Nasheed has made several remarks regarding the country's foreign relations during an official visit to India.

Nasheed, a prominent figure on the international stage, maintains close ties with regional nations. Upon his return from India, he told reporters at the airport that Mauritius—that has suspended diplomatic ties with the Maldives—is ready to engage in dialogue with the Maldivian government.

Mauritius ready for dialogue despite severing ties with Maldives, says Nasheed

Former President Mohamed Nasheed reports that Mauritius is open to dialogue with the Maldives despite severed diplomatic ties over the Chagos Archipelago dispute. Mauritius cut relations after the Maldives refused to recognize its sovereignty. Nasheed urged both nations to seek a peaceful resolution to their maritime boundary disagreements.

In its statement, the Foreign Ministry noted that remarks made by individuals who have held high-ranking state positions carry significant weight and can lead to major consequences. The Ministry emphasized that such statements must be based on accurate information and should foster national unity and public confidence in state institutions.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to engaging equitably and constructively with like-minded nations and international organizations on matters of regional peace, maritime security, sustainable development, and global stability.
